Obama with Bush advisers? Yes, of course.

Rachel Maddow has said twice tonight that Barack Obama needs
to make a clean break from the Bush administration and should not continue to
have meetings and photo ops with Bush appointees. She also said that he needs to
develop an economic mantra.

I like the idea about the mantra/motto/slogan and would welcome suggestions, but I think he’s really
helping himself by making certain that he’ll become more comfortable to people who may
still feel undecided about his candidacy. That, I think, is the whole point of
these economic education moments.

Obama likely wants to maintain some sense of continuity
regarding economic policy, largely to make certain that folks who are uncertain
of his candidacy can feel confidence in him and, critically, can imagine him being
President. The idea of voting for a Black man still feels really new for lots
of Americans. That’s an important consideration given how many toss up states
there really are this fall and how close the last two Presidential elections have been. (Everyone focuses on Florida and Ohio but consider how many states were/are close to flipping; every purple state matters in November.)   Perhaps this won’t be relevant to many of the
voters who live on the coasts or metropolitan areas who are accustomed to
having people of color make decisions about their lives, but asking Americans to
elect a Black man is still a significant challenge.
For folks who rarely interact with Black people, Obama’s candidacy is
representative of a radical shift in their concept of America. Obama is very
wise to make certain that his campaign provides clear examples of stability
even in the midst of some deeply progressive rhetoric. Some of us really need that.

Cold Blooded

I’m watching the Sixers-Pistons and Antonio McDyess just poked in the face. well, take that up another level. His face is bleeding so profusely they had to bring him a full sized towel to cover it. What’s great about this scene is that Philly fans are booing him mercilessly. Yes, this is the same town that once booed Santa Claus.

Unbelievable.

NBA midweek

I wish I could have told you last week that I anticipated the Clippers-Pacers tilt tonight to be one of the highlights of the early season. If I had, it would have been because it’s always fun to see announcers gush over the Dunleavy father son angle. Two 3-0 teams playing (mostly) without their power forward stars and recovering from awful finishes tells a great story in itself.

I hope to begin commenting more consistently and frequently on the NBA but my schedule does not allow thus far. That means nothing on Paul/Peja last night or the amazing sports resurgence of the Crescent City. Nothing on the Rockets appearing to be the real deal or the who cares of Heat/Spurs. Sad but true.

but lots more on the way, hopefully soon.

NBA 2007-08 preseason predictions

NBA Champion: Phoenix
Western Conference Champion: Phoenix
Eastern Conference Champion: Chicago (if Kobe trade goes through), Boston (if Kobe doesn’t move to the Bulls)
Pacific Division Champion: Phoenix
Northwest Division Champion: Utah
Southwest Division Champion: Dallas
Southeast Division Champion: Washington
Central Division Champion: Chicago
Atlantic Division Champion: Boston
MVP: Garnett, Nash, Amare, Arenas, Bryant*
Rookie of the Year: Kevin Durant (who else?)
Most Improved Player: Leandro Barbosa
Coach of the Year: Skiles, D’Antoni, O’Brien, Thomas, Saunders

* A friend presented me with interesting speculation about Kobe. It is his opinion that Kobe is likely to begin the season on a vicious tear intended to generate broader interest for the Lakers’ potential trade partners and force the Lakers’ hand. (As a Kobe fantasy owner I hope he’s right!) Kobe may be the one guy in the league who can put up such monstrous stats that he gets MVP love even with a mediocre team. If he lands in the Windy City as is rumored who knows how well he’ll be appreciated.

Bush and Islam

Bush Still Doesn’t Get It

This article describes some of the many reasons for the continued increase of suspicion of the US in the Muslim world. It also provides some specific, simple steps that the Bush administration could take to help change that perception. One of the major challenges to this possibility is simply that President Bush (still) doesn’t care enough to make understanding Islam a priority. It is much more than the religious foundation of the Middle East but also the prism through which many countries in the region and their populations view the world.

Bush should be able to relate to a theocentric perspective on the world, after all, Jesus is his favorite political philosopher.

Wedding Statement

I’ve been asked to reprint an element of our marriage program by numerous people. I think is the easiest way to make it available. Our country is still making progress in this direction. I hope you all help.

Thank you for being with us today. We are blessed with wonderful
family
and friends, and we are pleased that you are joining us as we celebrate
our wedding.

We appreciate and respect the values and benefits of marriage, thus it
saddens us that not everyone is allowed this opportunity. Fifty years
ago, our marriage would have been illegal in most states. Now, it seems
clear that making different laws based on race is discriminatory and
wrong. We think that making different laws based on sexual orientation
is also discriminatory and wrong.

Please join us in supporting laws, initiatives and politicians who
advocate marriage rights for everyone. Let love be the highest law.

Old Graying Man

What does it say about the changes in me that I went to the freezer to find dinner and was pleasantly surprised when I saw that the veggie lasagna I dug out was made with multigrain pasta? Welcome to my house, the Middle Age Hippiedome!
