French Open Men’s Final

I’m really excited to watch the Nadal-Federer final today.
For the 3
rd straight year, Federer will attempt to disrupt Nadal’s
undefeated championship streak at Roland Garros.

Both men are incredibly impressive. Fed is #1 and has won
virtually everything else in the sport. Nadal is still the clear #2 and so far
is 27-0 at the French and can tie Borg with 4 straight titles.

The stakes are incredibly high here. If Nadal wins, then
yes, it’s an historic win that some say would make him the best clay courter of all time (somehow surpassing Borg who won 4 in a row and 6 total) and cements his status as the clearest contender for #1
(Djokovic is sniffing around at a strong #3). For Federer, it seems fairly
universal now that if he wins today, he’ll be considered the best tennis player
of all time. That’s a huge statement but he’s been so good that it makes sense.

What takes this match over the top is that both guys have
their impenetrable surfaces (Federer on Wimbledon’s grass is perhaps even more
impressive than Nadal is on the red clay) but the other player is getting
better on their weaker surface. Last year’s French and Wimbledon finals were
both tremendous matches. The contrasts are muting and the tennis is getting
better. What else can we ask for?

Hmmm, how about a fantastic match today then another next
month? Sounds great to me…

Scoop on the Truth about the Truth

This is a thoughtful Scoop Jackson suggesting why Paul Pierce is the real heart and soul of the Celtics. An interesting link to Magic Johnson is discussed as well. It was very new to me.

Bird’s Best (almost)

I’m watching the 1987 NBA Finals Game 6. Just a minute or so
into the 2nd half Bird drives past Worthy toward the baseline and misses a
short jumper.
 Kareem and Bird go
for the rebound and tip the ball away from the rim as the ref, anticipating
contact, calls a too quick whistle. On replay, it’s clear there was no foul and
virtually no contact on the rebound action. I hate bad officiating.

The ref walks away, looking back all the way from his
station out of bounds behind the baseline past Bird, Kareem, Magic and McHale
to identify James Worthy as the fouler.

No, Worthy was not in the play after Bird blew past him. I
mean it’s James Worthy; he’d taken a few steps towards the Lakers’ goal
already. What else? Not only was Worthy literally about 6’ away from Bird but
Danny Ainge was physically in between the Worthy and Bird.

Kareem had just picked up a (touchy considering the who,
when and what) 4
th foul moments before and Larry Bird was the passer
on the play. Whaddya mean, passer? Yes, that’s the most amazing thing about
this whole situation.

What looked like typically random rebound action for about 5
viewings of this play, looked too lucky on #6, and by replay #9 was an almost
unimaginable pass, even from Larry Bird. After the shot went short and as
Kareem is rebounding the ball, Bird double hand (left dominant) tips it
DIRECTLY to Kevin McHale all alone under the basket. It was really hard to see any possibility of Bird seeing around Kareem well enough to know where McHale was. And to tip it precisely as Kareem is rebounding it? Simply phenomenal.  Without the bogus foul call,
the NBA highlight reel would always include this play among Bird’s best. I hate
bad officiating.

2008 Finals Game 1 Thoughts

 Excellent!

This was a really fun game to watch. Even though it was not
the best played game it was intense and hard fought.

I have to confess that I was quite surprised to see how
anxious the Lakers looked in the second half. I imagine most folks will suggest
that the return of Pierce from injury was the turning point but the Celtics actually
began changing the tenor of the game as soon as Pierce was carried back.
The first half seemed to set a great
stage for them to steal home court advantage in Game 1 but it just didn’t
appear that they viewed it as an opportunity. The Lakers seemed to be playing
not to lose for a large chunk of the second half. Very atypical for this club.

The real difference of the second half was that the Lakers
clearly appeared to be waiting for Kobe to win the game for them. Fisher played
hard but didn’t score much in the second half and neither Gasol nor Odom had
the kind of impact the Lakers will need them to have if they are to win the
title this year.

The Celtics seemed to ride their emotion and effort to
victory. They were the more aggressive team on both ends of the court
(exception coming soon) and that means they got to the foul line, were effective
in forcing the Lakers to take contested shots and make contested passes and on
numerous occasions won tips, kept balls alive, made deflections and generally
outhustled the Lakers (DFish was a notable exception).

All that being said, Celtics fans should still be nervous as
Doc Rivers made some pretty poor coaching decisions. Even Mark Jackson noted
that Sam Cassell stayed in the game too long. Obviously. And the exception to
the aggressive tendencies of the Celtics was Kevin Garnett. KG did a better job
of taking enough shots to really impact the game. Good stuff. In the second
half, he kept taking jump shots and missing them. Bad stuff. Doc Rivers needed
to remind KG how he got into such a great rhythm in the first half. He went to
the basket repeatedly and strongly. On the couple occasions he made a concerted
effort to drive the ball in the second half he reverted to taking layups that
were contested instead of forcing his way to the rim or foul line. He needed to
take fewer Alex English shots and more Moses Malone shots. Of course KG has always
seemed more interested in being English than Malone, hasn’t he?

From the results of Game 1 I think the Lakers’ best lineup
might be DFish, Vujacic, Kobe, Odom and Gasol. By the way, if Phil Jackson has
already lost faith in Odom for the whole series then Kobe will have to be more
like Michael than he thinks for the Lakers to win.

For the Cs I’d say their best group is Rondo, Allen (Ray of
course), Posey, Pierce and Garnett. Depending on game play though, the Celtics
might legitimately want to consider having Brown, Perkins or even Powe on the
floor if Odom plays well enough to force KG to guard him. All three of those
bigs are energetic and rebound well enough to really frustrate Gasol.

Hopefully the series continues the level of intensity of the
first game and the players settle down enough to increase the quality of play.

Zo and Nellie?

Wouldn’t Alonzo Mourning be the perfect fit for Golden State? He doesn’t need to score but can, he defends, blocks shots and rebounds and has the kind of intensity and drive for winning that only Stephen Jackson has on their current roster.

For Zo to play 20 minutes a game and shepherd Andris Biedrins and Brendan Wright into NBA manhood would be the perfect conclusion to his career and would immediately elevate GSW into a Finals darkhorse next season. He connects virtually all the dots Nellie would want him to.

Double Foul

I’m shocked but Jon Barry just said he doesn’t think there should ever be double fouls. Is he crazy?!? Double fouls and jump balls are the two play stoppages that should happen much more frequently. Technical fouls should be called more often too but not substantially.

Double fouls clean up the game. Coaches hate them and players hate them but they are incredibly effective. Players change their level of aggression and enmity when double fouls are called on them.

Just Have to Share

The Cubs defeated the Mets Tuesday, 8-1, their fourth consecutive win by six or more runs. It’s the first time since 1886 – yes that’s 1886, as in the first Grover Cleveland administration – that the Cubs have won four straight, all by at least six runs.

from ESPN. com

Grover Cleveland- yes, the only person to win the Presidency in non-successive terms. Even though I’m from Indiana, I always feel badly for him. He was so obviously a better President than Benjamin Harrison. That being said, I appreciate that Benjamin Harrison has a very simple gravesite. It is not at all ostentatious even though it easily could be. Interestingly enough, he is one of THREE Benjamin Harrisons interned in the same cemetery. Let’s hope they’re Sr. Jr. and III. Please.

NBA playoff predictions

East 1st Round:

Boston vs. Atlanta

The Hawks will give boston a sterner test than people anticipate. That being said, with no playoff experience and a poor coach (sorry, Mike Woodson) the Cs will come out on top.

Prediction: Boston in 6

Cleveland vs. Washington

The Cavs need more and different help for LeBron than they got at the trade deadline. The Wiz match up really well with the Cavs and will be able to impose a faster pace than Mike Brown wants. Unfortunately, I think this is the beginning of the end for his coaching tenure in northern Ohio.

Washington in 6

Detroit vs. Philadelphia

Philly has the heart but not the skill. I think Detroit may use this series as an opportunity to make a statement to the rest of the East that Boston isn’t the only squad with championship aspirations.

Detroit in 5

Orlando vs. Toronto

A tough, hard series that could go either way. I’ll pick the Raptors in 7 because a) I love Toronto and always want the Raps to do well as karmic retribution for still having Vince Carter be their all-time most notable player and b) they have some, not many but some, players with top level competitive experience. Toss up.

Toronto in 7

West 1st round:

LA Lakers vs. Denver

The Nuggets should be able to compete with the Lakers on a talent basis but I don’t think they care enough to win close games. As good as the individual components are, there’s not a lot of team in the Rocky Mountain roundballers. The Lakers meanwhile are streaking and seem ready to make a sustained playoff run.

LA in 6

Utah vs. Houston

The Rockets were a great story while streaking but they’ll get one game in this series. Tops.

Utah in 5

San Antonio vs. Phoenix

The Suns feel this is their time to shine. I think they’re finally right. Shaq will make a difference but Nash’s late game savvy and the Spurs’ total inability to slow STAT will be the ultimate determinants of this series.

Phoenix in 6

New Orleans vs. Dallas

I know, I know, a playoff rookie can’t be your best player. Except Chris Paul violates all the rules. I anticipate massive momentum swings and unsung heroes in this series. Game 7 is in the Big Easy and as much as Dirk wants it, I think the good vibrations and voodoo spirits will give the C2I2H* one more reason to laissez le bon temps roulez.

New Orleans in 7

All-NBA second and third teams

All-NBA second team

F- Dirk Nowitzki

With nearly the same production as last year, Nowitzki’s still among the top players in the world despite getting no MVP consideration due to the Mavs underwhelming season. Dirk may have been more valuable this year. Without his quick return from his ankle sprain, the Warriors, not the Mavs would be in the playoffs right now.

F- Carlos Boozer

The Booz still has a personality problem outside Utah thanks to stabbing the Cavs (yes, and their blind owner) in the back. That being said, the Jazz were incredibly impressive this year with Carlos doing all the tough stuff. He’s genuinely become a top notch guy.

C- Dwight Howard

Easy pick here and almost made 1st team. He’ll likely be a fixture on this list for the next 8 to 10 years.

G- Chauncey Billups

Overlooked because of Detroit’s team concept but check out his PER numbers and notice how well he’s defended the top guards in the league this year. It’s hard to believe he was given up for dead early in his career.

G- Steve Nash

Overshadowed because of the rise of the young stud point guards, Nash had another exceptional season. In fact, considering the rancor surrounding the team at the start of the year and the massive changes introduced by the Shaq trade, keeping the Suns near the top of the league is nearly as impressive as the turnaround he produced three seasons ago.

All-NBA third team

F- Tim Duncan

Still one of the best players in the world but this was not his strongest season. Manu was the Spurs best player and Duncan was not able to dominate many games. So he ‘falls’ to 3rd team.

F- Tracy McGrady

2nd longest win streak ever. He’s not my kind of player because of his utter lack of efficiency but he deserves credit.

C- Al Jefferson

Ish. I hate to reward a player from such a bad team but the other strong candidates were either injured, awful offensively or unwilling to be considered centers.

G- Allen Iverson

Still getting it done in his unique, staggering fashion. Amazing.

G- Manu Ginobili

He became the go to guy for the Spurs this year and one of the very best guards in the league. This was supposed to be Tony Parker’s explosive year but it’s Manu who’s taken the ball and run with it.
